WET CLEANING : What is Wet Cleaning ?

Throughout history, people washed clothing and garments with water

In the late 1800’ , when petroleum become popular, people started using solvents to clean garments, It was called “Dry Cleaning” .
   
In the beginning, “hydrocarbons” were used, by the mid of the twentieh century, they were replaced by chlorinated hydrocarbons “solvents” safer in terms of fire and explosions, but more harmful in terms of health and environment.
 
 
Even if the latest generation of perchloroethylene machines has reached a very good level of safety, with devices which reduce the emissions of solvent, all manufacturers worked on research on new technologies complying with environmental regulations.
 
   


 

 Since late 90s Danube R & D department has responded to changes in the textile industry by developing new technology, o: “wet Cleaning” is one of them
 
Wet Cleaning is a garment cleaning technique that uses detergents and water and which is processed in a washing machine , and not in a dry cleaning machine.
This technique was used in the 30s and the 40s by professional cleaners for all natural fiber garments, they used solvents to clean the remainder, spots , stains , etc.
   
   
The introduction of non-flammable solvents by mid 20’ century, allowed Professionnal cleaners to dry clean almost every things, wet cleaning was forgotten.
 
The difference between the two techniques is that dry cleaning is based on toxic solvents , wet cleaning use water and non toxic detergents
 
 
The percentage of textiles which can be cleaned in an environmentaly-friendy wet cleaning process is rapidly increasing, to day, Very Skilled professional are able to Wet clean almost 100% of all garments which are usually dry-cleaned.
   
 
To day with concerns about pollution and environment, and advances in Wet Cleaning technology, have revived wet cleaning as the alternative, but certain fabrics can shrink, dyes can bleed, and texture can be altered when immersed and agitated in water.

Skilled wet cleaners have a lot of tools to make sure that garments are safely cleaned, they can apply mild bleaching detergents to remove stains, fabric softener to restore softness, agents to prevent dye from washing out.
